Sixth Grade



Sixth grade year at St. John’s Day School is an exciting time. We offer students a wide variety of activities that appeal to the whole child while boosting self-esteem and reinforcing personal responsibility.

August

  • Safety Patrol: Sixth grade receives safety patrol assignments. Students must arrive at school by 7:40 am during the week of duty.
  • Chapel Readings/Acolyte Assignments: Sixth grade receives chapel reading and acolyte assignments.
  • Sixth Grade Mentorship: Sixth grade meets pre-k mentorees and is assigned 2-3 students to guide throughout the school year. Sixth grade meets with pre-k mentorees once every two weeks.

September

  • Beta Club Induction/File to Run for Student Council: Students turn in paperwork to run for student council. Parents and students attend Beta Club Induction Ceremony.

October

  • Eaglefest: Sixth grade sells an item or has a booth. Students assist preschool with jumps/slides.
  • Halloween Party

November

  • Student Council Speeches & Elections: Immediately the following chapel. Parents may attend speeches.
  • Veteran’s Day Living History Museum (5th & 6th): Design posters, wear a costume, decorate the gym, invite veterans (mail letters), and bring items for breakfast.
  • Thanksgiving Luncheon: Sixth grade volunteers during luncheon.
  • Turkey Trot & Food Drive: Students bring canned goods and deliver them to Glory House.

December

  • Pre-K Cookies & Cocoa Santa vs Grinch Party: Sixth grade assists pre-k students during the party, set up and cleaning up, and dress as Santa’s Helpers or Grinch.
  • 5th and 6th Chapel Program/Christmas Performances: Sixth grade parents decorate the stage. Fifth grade parents are responsible for food items. Travel to nursing homes and Howard’s provided by fifth and sixth grade parents. There is also a performance at First United Methodist Church of Laurel (date TBD).
  • Christmas Party

January

  • Candy Gram Order Forms: Students hand out Candy Gram Fundraiser Order Forms.
  • Air Jam Practice: Practice at school begins 2:00-3:00 pm two times per week.

February

  • Sixth Grade Sweetheart Dance: Open to all fifth and sixth graders in Jones County. Open to seventh grade alumni of St. John’s. Sixth grade parents choose location and DJ, sell tickets, serve pizza and lemonade, set up, and clean up.
  • Sixth Grade Candy Grams: Sixth Grade Fundraiser. Students sell, fill orders, and deliver Valentine’s Day goodies to classrooms on Valentine’s Day.
  • Valentine’s Party
  • Mardi Gras Luncheon: Sixth grade volunteers during luncheon.

March

  • Air Jam: Sixth grade fundraiser variety show. Sixth grade students decide on a theme, t-shirt design, and performance songs. Mrs. Melissa aids them in the decision-making process and helps with choreography. Sixth grade parents are responsible for raffle Items, set-up and clean-up, concession stand, photographer, MC, music, backstage manager, welcome table with programs, and raffle tickets.
  • May Pole Dance Practice: Practice begins at school the Monday after Air Jam.
  • School-Wide Open House: Sixth grade volunteers during this event.

April

  • Egg or Scavenger Hunt: Plan an egg or scavenger hunt.
  • Flowering of the Cross: Decorate the class cross.
  • Easter Breakfast Party: Breakfast items in the classroom.

May

  • May Day: Sixth grade must arrive at the school dressed and ready to go by 4:30 pm for photos.
  • 5th and 6th Last Will and Testament: Sixth graders purchase gifts for the fifth grade.
  • Hoe & Hope Pool Party: Parents and teachers drive students to Sandra Bateman’s house. Bring a towel, sunscreen, and a change of clothing. Lunch is served at 11:00 am.
  • Shaving Cream War: Bring at least two cans of shaving cream each to the front lawn of the school. Immediately following the pool party. Bring a towel, goggles, and a change of clothing.
  • Graduation Practice: Practice is held at St. John’s Episcopal Church at 8:30 am on the day of graduation.
  • Sixth Grade Graduation: Students arrive at St. John’s Episcopal Church at 5:00 pm for photos. Graduation dinner after. (Parents are responsible for location (generally at the church), meal, costs, tickets, and slideshow.
  • AR Water Party: Bring a towel, water gun, and change of clothing.
