At St. John’s Day School, we believe the arts are as important as academics and are integrated into every part of our curriculum. The arts are proven to develop a growth mindset, build self-confidence, improve cognition and communication, and deepen cultural and self-understanding.
Art Classes
Kindergarten through sixth grade students meet weekly for art instruction using a wide variety of media, including pencils, various types of paint, pastels, and other crafting materials. Students are annually encouraged to enter their art in the City Wide Art Contest, Day in the Park, and the Fair. A Memorial Art Award is given to a sixth grade student at graduation each year.
Ariel Ball Memorial Art Award
The Ariel Ball Memorial Art Award is given in loving memory of Ariel Ball. This award is being given because of Ariel’s tremendous love for art. It is only fitting that the Ariel Ball Memorial Art Award is given to the student at St. John’s Day School who exhibits excellence in the field of art.
Fine Arts
Music plays an important role in childhood development. Our faculty uses song and dance in morning meetings and in daily classroom instruction. In addition, students meet twice per week with a music and dance instructor to learn chapel and May Day programs. A Fine Arts Award is given to a student in sixth grade at graduation each year.
Tomlinson Fine Arts Award
The Tomlinson Fine Arts Award is given in loving memory of Ruth and Tommy Tomlinson for their many years of dedicated service to St. John’s Day School. Ruth was the creator and director of thirty-six May Days. Tommy was the school photographer and handled the sound. He was also an outstanding musician. He played the piano and the clarinet and probably many more instruments. He and Mr. Bob Hynson would sometimes sing a song or two in beautiful harmony for us. God blessed Ruth and Tommy with so many creative talents that they shared so generously with the St. John’s Day School. It is only fitting that the Tomlinson Award is a Fine Arts Award given to the student at St. John’s Day School who exhibits excellence in the field of music and/or art.
